Katie Morag
This term, we have been exploring the Katie Morag stories.  We have discussed the setting and the main characters in the stories.  We have been working with a partner to make the houses and people for a Katie Morag display.  Today, we made a shop and post office outside our classroom.

Children in Need!
We had lots of fun today, raising money for Children in Need.  We have learned a little bit about the charity and how Pudsey loves to help children.  Today we enjoyed a fantastic P5 'Best Assembly Ever' - it really was!  In the afternoon we could buy buns, take part in some fun activities and have a dance at the Hero Hoe-Down.
P1 make a particularly big effort today and everyone was dressed up.
Altogether, we raised £570.22.

Phonics
We have had very busy brains in P1, as we have started the school phonics scheme.
We are building up our skills in three main areas:

1.  Blending sounds together to read words
2.  Splitting up a spoken word so we can write/make words
3.  Learning how to correctly form letters

So far we have been using the letters s, a, t, i, p, n, c and k!

Measuring
This week our maths focus is on measuring.  We have been exploring how to measure how heavy something is and we turned ourselves into human balances.
Some people have been enjoying exploring the balance in their own time.  These boys are putting weights in one pan and then adding cubes to the other pan to make it balance.

Bookbug Packs
Today in P1 we had visitors from the Kirkwall Library.  The two ladies were here to give us our P1 Bookbug packs.  In the pack there are three books for us all to keep.  They read us two of the books and we sang some songs together.  We will be reading the third book tomorrow and then everyone can take their pack home.  When we know the books really well, we will be voting for which one we think is the best.
Thanks very much to Sally and Sandra for coming to visit.

Be Bright, Be Seen!
We were all at an assembly where the Junior Road Safety Offices (JRSOs) told us about how important it is to wear our reflective jackets now that it is darker at home time.  We spoke about how important it is to be seen at Halloween and Bonfire Night when we are out and about later at night.
We made this lovely display in our classroom to help remind us about wearing our reflective jackets.  Mrs Gorn helped us make a night sky with fireworks, Miss Pirie helped us to draw the people and paint on the bright clothing and Ms Thomson, our art teacher, helped us to make sparklers for the people to hold.
