Plants and Animals
P1 are learning about plants and animals this term.

P6 pupils came to help us plant Nasturtium and Marigold seeds.  We learned about what seeds need to grow.

We have made a Garden Centre in our den.  We are having fun making things and buying and selling.

We are looking after our tadpoles and watching them grow and change.

We spoke about how we know something is alive.  We went outside to find some living and not living things.

We went on a Nature Walk around Stromness to discover what kinds of plants and animals live in our local environment.  We saw lots of bluebells and starlings.

Disappearing Puddles
In P1, we have started a new topic - Water.  We will be looking at how water changes state, using everyday examples.  Today we were observing the sun heating up and taking the water out of our puddles to make the clouds in the sky.  We made lots of little puddles and drew round them with chalk so we would know where they had been.  When we came back after half an hour they were gone!  We decided to make a really big puddle to see if the same thing would happen.  It did!

Happy Holi
In P1 we have been learning about the Hindu festival Holi.  Holi is a festival to celebrate the coming of Spring and everyone has fun throwing coloured paint powder.  We enjoyed learning about Holi so much, we also learned a little bit about Diwali where Hindus celebrate the safe return of Rama and Sita.
We decorated our den in an Indian style and having been enjoying dressing up in clothes that Indie gave the school, playing with coloured rice and looking at information books.

A Good Game!

Today we played a game where we had to listen to a 'ng' word and then find the matching dinosaur egg.  Click on the link below to have a go at home...

'I can sort in a variety of ways according to my own and other's criteria.'

This week in maths, we are learning about sorting, gathering information and displaying our findings.  Yesterday in P.E. we played games where we had to collect and sort objects and ourselves.  Today we worked in groups to decide how to sort different things in the classroom.  We realised we could sort according to lots of different criteria including size, colour, gender and even whether a letter was a vowel or consonant.

World Book Day
Yesterday was World Book Day and to celebrate the occasion, most of the P1s got dressed up as book characters.  All week we have been enjoying browsing the book fair in the library and buying books.  We read lots of the book fair books in class and wrote about our favourites.  Fleabag and Supertato were very popular with our class.
Today we went to the P2 assembly to hear more about World Book Day and reading.  Well done P2 - it was a very informative assembly.

Addition
P1 have started to explore addition in maths.  We have been looking at the 'stories' of  numbers for example working out how many different ways you can make 6.  This was a good problem solving activity and some people were able to find lots of ways to make a total.
We then used what we had learned to solve addition sums using cubes, counters, dinosaurs and other materials.  It is really important that children have a good understanding of what addition means and how you can help yourself to solve tricky sums.  So even if you think you might know they answer - check using your materials!
